- The deck holds 108 cards: numbers 0–9 in four colors, plus action cards and wilds.
- Each player gets 7 cards. The rest becomes the draw pile, and one card is flipped to start the discard pile.
- On your turn, play a card matching the top of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol. If you can't, draw one.
- Action cards: Skip (the next player loses their turn), Reverse (flips the direction of play) and Draw Two.
- Wilds: the Wild changes the color to whatever you choose; the Wild Draw Four changes color and makes the next player draw four.
- When you're down to one card you must say UNO. Get caught silent and you draw a penalty.

UNO holds more decision than it appears to. The biggest one is when to spend the Wild Draw Four: playing it early just to switch colors wastes the strongest card in the deck. Holding it until an opponent is down to one or two cards turns their win into four more cards in hand.
When you play a wild, choose the color you hold most of — not the color your opponent seems to lack. It sounds like the same thing, but it isn't: the first improves your odds every round afterward; the second rests on a guess that is usually wrong.
Watch who draws. A player who has drawn three times on blue almost certainly has no blue. If you have a choice, keep the game in the color that jams them, even at the cost of a slightly worse card.
Counting action cards pays: there are only 8 Draw Twos, 4 Wilds and 4 Wild Draw Fours in the whole deck. Once you've seen all four Wild Draw Fours, nobody can ambush you with one on the last round.
There's a risk calculation in UNO almost nobody makes: when you're down to two cards and one is a Wild Draw Four, it's nearly always better to play the other one first. Play the Wild and an opponent bounces the turn back with a Skip, and you're left holding a card that may not match — and drawing with one card in hand is the worst place in the game.
In 3- and 4-player tables, Reverse changes function entirely. With two players it's just a Skip; with three or four it can hand the turn straight back to you after a single opponent plays, making it the best defensive card in the deck when the player to your left is about to go out.

UNO was created in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barbershop owner in Ohio, after a family argument about the rules of Crazy Eights. He spent $8,000 printing the first thousand decks and sold them from his own barbershop. The game was bought by a funeral parlour company in 1972 — an unlikely story, but a true one — and went on to become a worldwide phenomenon.
UNO is, at heart, a commercial version of Crazy Eights, a game that had existed on ordinary playing cards for decades. What Robbins added was action cards with their own identity and, above all, the rule of calling 'UNO' — a social detail that turned a discard game into a loud one.
