Ludo is dice luck plus board decisions — and almost everyone plays only the first half. The decision that matters most is: advance the token in front, or bring a new one out of the base? The answer is nearly always to bring one out. With more tokens in play, every number you roll has more possible destinations, and you stop being hostage to a bad die.
Capturing beats advancing. Sending an enemy token back to base costs them everything it had walked; no 6-square advance of yours matches that. If the capture is on offer, take it — even if it disrupts your most advanced token.
A lone token in the open is a token that's going back to base. Travel in pairs where you can, and rest on star squares, especially when passing an opponent's exit zone.
Near the end, deliberately keep one token back. While it is on the board it threatens to capture; if you race everyone home at once, the last ones travel uncovered.
3-player Ludo is a different game from the 4-player version, and hardly anyone notices. With three, an implicit alliance forms: whoever leads becomes the target of the other two, and capturing the leader is usually worth more than advancing. If you're ahead in a three-player game, play defensively and rest on safe squares — two people want the same thing.
Save your sixes when you have a choice. Rolling a 6 grants an extra turn, but if all your tokens are already out, the 6 is just a 6-square move. The best use of a six is nearly always to free a token from base, because that gives you options on every turn to come, not only this one.

Ludo is a Victorian simplification of pachisi, a 6th-century Indian game played on a cross-shaped cloth with cowrie shells instead of dice. Legend holds that Emperor Akbar played pachisi in a marble courtyard using people as pieces. The British patented the board version in 1896, swapping in a cubic die, and called it Ludo — Latin for 'I play'.
It's the same game that became Parcheesi in the United States, Parchís in Spain and Mensch ärgere Dich nicht in Germany. The structure never changes: four tokens each, one lap of the board, and a final race to the centre. What differs from country to country are the capture and blocking rules.
