- Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen and a king. White moves first.

The opening has three jobs, and only three: take the center, develop your knights and bishops, and castle your king to safety. Beginners spend the opening chasing an early queen check; any decent player simply defends with tempo, and you end up retreating the queen with your army still at home.
A piece that isn't doing anything doesn't exist. Before attacking, count how many of your pieces are involved and how many of your opponent's are defending. Attacks launched with two pieces against four defenders fail — that's arithmetic, not talent.
Tactics decide amateur games, and nearly all of them reduce to three patterns: the fork (one piece attacks two), the pin (a piece can't move because something more valuable sits behind it) and the skewer (the reverse of a pin).
