Position is the most underrated variable in poker. Acting last means seeing what everyone did before you decide — free information, round after round. The very same hand that is trash under the gun can be profitable on the button, and that difference alone explains much of a player's long-run results.

Folding is the most profitable move in poker and the hardest one to make. Most beginners play too many hands because entering is fun and quitting isn't. But every marginal hand you call 'just to see' bleeds chips slowly, invisibly, and it doesn't come back.

Bluffing isn't lying at random: it's telling a coherent story. If you called passively all the way and then shove on the river, nobody buys it — the story doesn't add up. A bluff works when your earlier bets would make sense had you actually held the hand you're representing.

Watch other players' patterns more than your own cards. Who always raises, who only calls, who folds under pressure — that's worth more than any pocket pair you're dealt.

Learn to think in ranges, not hands. Asking 'what does he have?' almost never has an answer; asking 'what set of hands would he play this way?' always does. If a player raised preflop, bet a high-card flop and bet again on the turn, their range is narrow and strong — and your pair of twos may be worth nothing against it.

Bet sizing tells a story as loudly as the bet itself. Always betting the same amount regardless of your hand is the easiest way to become unreadable — and also the easiest way to be exploited, because you stop extracting value from your good hands. Vary it, but vary it with purpose.

Poker took shape in New Orleans in the early 19th century, blending the French poque, the German pochen and the Persian as-nas. It travelled up the Mississippi on the steamboats and became a frontier game, played with 20 cards and a single round of betting. The 52-card deck, the flush and the draw came later, during the American Civil War.

Texas Hold'em — the variant that effectively defines poker today — is comparatively new: it was born in Robstown, Texas, in the early 20th century, and only became dominant once it was adopted as the World Series of Poker format. The community-card idea, where five cards are shared by everyone, is what gives Hold'em the strategic depth the older variants lacked.
