Chromeld is a card game for 2โ4 players using a 108-card deck. Be the first to empty your hand by matching cards by color or number. Special cards like +4 and Reverse add chaos. Play free Chromeld online at BoardGame Battles โ no download needed.
๐ Rules โ How to Play, Step by Step
- The deck holds 108 cards: numbers 0โ9 in four colors, plus action cards and wilds.
- Each player gets 7 cards. The rest becomes the draw pile, and one card is flipped to start the discard pile.
- On your turn, play a card matching the top of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol. If you can't, draw one.
- Action cards: Skip (the next player loses their turn), Reverse (flips the direction of play) and Draw Two.
- Wilds: the Wild changes the color to whatever you choose; the Wild Draw Four changes color and makes the next player draw four.
- The first player to discard every card wins.
๐ก 3 Tips to Win
- Save the +4 Wild for when you have fewer than 3 cards โ maximizes its impact
- Change color to your most-held color when playing a Wild card
- A Wild Draw Four can only be played if you have no card matching the current color
โ๏ธ Advanced Strategy
Chromeld holds more decision than it appears to. The biggest one is when to spend the Wild Draw Four: playing it early just to switch colors wastes the strongest card in the deck. Holding it until an opponent is down to one or two cards turns their win into four more cards in hand.
When you play a wild, choose the color you hold most of โ not the color your opponent seems to lack. It sounds like the same thing, but it isn't: the first improves your odds every round afterward; the second rests on a guess that is usually wrong.
Watch who draws. A player who has drawn three times on blue almost certainly has no blue. If you have a choice, keep the game in the color that jams them, even at the cost of a slightly worse card.
Counting action cards pays: there are only 8 Draw Twos, 4 Wilds and 4 Wild Draw Fours in the whole deck. Once you've seen all four Wild Draw Fours, nobody can ambush you with one on the last round.
There's a risk calculation in Chromeld almost nobody makes: when you're down to two cards and one is a Wild Draw Four, it's nearly always better to play the other one first. Play the Wild and an opponent bounces the turn back with a Skip, and you're left holding a card that may not match โ and drawing with one card in hand is the worst place in the game.
In 3- and 4-player tables, Reverse changes function entirely. With two players it's just a Skip; with three or four it can hand the turn straight back to you after a single opponent plays, making it the best defensive card in the deck when the player to your left is about to go out.
โ ๏ธ Common Beginner Mistakes
- Dumping action cards early just to be rid of them. They are your defense when someone is about to go out.
- Playing the Wild Draw Four too early just to switch colors, wasting the strongest card in the deck.
- Picking a wild's color without looking at your own hand.
๐ฐ๏ธ History and Origin
Color-and-number matching card games have existed in many forms for decades, almost always with the same skeleton: a discard pile, cards that must match by color or value, and a handful of action cards to turn the game around. Chromeld is BoardGame Battles' own take on that classic genre โ its own deck, symbols and visual identity built for the app.
What gives Chromeld its personality is the action cards: Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, and the two Wilds. Each one turns a simple race to empty your hand into a match full of twists.
๐ Game Variants
Standard Chromeld
108 cards, no stacking Draw Twos. This is the BoardGame Battles mode.
Stacking
A house rule where a Draw Two can be answered with another, compounding the draw. Not how Chromeld plays by default.
Jump-in
Anyone holding the identical card to the top of the pile can play it out of turn. A popular house rule.
๐ How It Works Online
Chromeld at BoardGame Battles is available for 2, 3 and 4 players, against AI or online.
In the 3- and 4-player modes the table is public: it fills with real players and starts by itself once full. If someone's missing, AI opponents complete the table at your chosen difficulty, so a game never sits stuck waiting for people.

- Flips the direction of play. With 2 players it acts as a Skip.
- Draw pile
- The stack you draw from when you have no legal play.
- Pending draw
- A Draw Two or Wild Draw Four the next player still owes before their turn continues.
