Blackjack is a card game where players try to beat the dealer by getting a hand value closer to 21 without going over. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10; Aces are worth 1 or 11.
Essential tips
- At the start, each player and the dealer receive 2 cards; one dealer card is face-up, one face-down
- Hit: take another card. Stand: keep your current hand. Double Down: double your bet and take exactly one more card
- Split: if you have two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands (each with its own bet)
- Blackjack: an Ace + a 10-value card = 21 on the first two cards — typically pays 3:2
- Bust: hand value exceeds 21 — automatic loss
- Dealer must hit until reaching 17 or above — this rule is what makes Blackjack beatable with strategy

Never take Insurance. The Insurance bet (offered when dealer shows an Ace) has a house edge of ~5.8% — much worse than basic strategy Blackjack. Professional players never take it, regardless of what they're holding.
