In Texas Hold'em, the player with the best 5-card hand wins the pot. Here are all hand rankings from strongest to weakest, with examples.
Royal Flush (Best)
A, K, Q, J, 10 — all of the same suit. Example: A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠. Unbeatable — the rarest hand in poker.
Straight Flush
Five consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 7♥ 8♥ 9♥ 10♥ J♥. Only beaten by a higher straight flush or Royal Flush.
Four of a Kind (Quads)
Four cards of the same rank. Example: K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣ + any card. Extremely strong — very rarely beaten.
Full House
Three of a kind + a pair. Example: Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ 8♣ 8♥. Read as 'Queens full of Eights'.
Flush
Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence. Example: A♣ J♣ 8♣ 5♣ 2♣. Ranked by highest card.
Straight
Five consecutive cards of any suit. Example: 5♠ 6♥ 7♣ 8♦ 9♠. Ace can be high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (A-2-3-4-5).
Three of a Kind (Trips)
Three cards of the same rank. Example: J♠ J♥ J♦ + 2 other cards.
Two Pair
Two different pairs. Example: K♠ K♦ 7♥ 7♣ + 1 other card.
One Pair
Two cards of the same rank. Example: A♠ A♥ + 3 other cards. The most common winning hand.
High Card (Worst)
No combination — the hand is ranked by its highest card. Example: A♠ J♥ 9♣ 6♦ 2♠ = 'Ace high'.
