Blackjack Rules for Beginners: How to Play and Win

Complete Blackjack guide: card values, when to hit or stand, doubling, splitting, dealer rules and the basic strategy that cuts the house edge to 0.5%.

What is Blackjack?

Blackjack (also called 21) is the casino card game with the best odds for the player — when played with correct basic strategy, the house edge is only about 0.5%. You play against the dealer, not against other players, making it one of the most accessible casino games to learn.

Goal of the game

Get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's hand, without going over 21. If you exceed 21, you "bust" and lose immediately — even if the dealer also busts.

Card values

📌 A hand containing an Ace counted as 11 is called a "soft hand" (e.g., Ace + 6 = soft 17). A hand where the Ace must count as 1 is a "hard hand" (e.g., Ace + 6 + K = hard 17).

How a round plays out

  1. You place your bet before any cards are dealt.
  2. The dealer gives you 2 cards (both face up) and deals 2 cards to themselves (one face up, one face down — the hole card).
  3. You choose your action (hit, stand, double down, split).
  4. After you finish, the dealer reveals the hole card and plays by fixed house rules.
  5. Hands are compared — whoever is closer to 21 without busting wins.

Your actions

💡 Golden rules: Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. These are universal basic strategy principles that apply in virtually every blackjack variant.

Dealer rules

The dealer has no choice — they follow fixed rules:

This rigidity is exactly what allows you to use strategy — you can see one of the dealer's cards and calculate risk accordingly.

The natural blackjack

A natural blackjack is when your first two cards are an Ace + any 10-value card (10, J, Q, K), giving you 21 instantly.

A natural blackjack pays 3:2 — if you bet $10, you win $15 (plus your $10 back). If the dealer also has blackjack, it's a push (tie) and you get your bet back.

Basic strategy

Basic strategy is a mathematically optimal set of decisions for every possible combination of your hand and the dealer's visible card. Following it reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5%.

Core rules to memorize

Why the dealer's upcard matters so much

If the dealer shows a 6, they likely have 16 total (assuming their hole card is 10). With 16, they must hit and have a high chance of busting. This completely changes your strategy — sometimes it's better to stand with a weak hand like 14 and wait for the dealer to bust than to risk taking another card.
